Acid Defense

Acid Defense - Garden of Life Heart Burn Formula

Acid Defense supplement is a natural, alkalinizing formula designed to support digestive health. On those occasions when you experience temporary heartburn, acid indigestion or upper GI distress, Acid Defense's super-alkalinizing ingredients help rapidly restore your body's proper pH and provide reinforcement for alkaline reserves. An excellent source of electrolytes, containing a blend of live enzymes, neutralizing minerals and probiotics from goat's milk whey. *Stomach Soothe Enzyme Blend™ is a registered trademark of National Enzyme Company.

Maintaining a balanced pH is the most important metabolic function your body performs, aside from breathing and maintaining a heartbeat. Ingredients such as barley, beet and carrot juice support this vital function by providing naturally occurring potassium, calcium, magnesium and other alkalinizing components that soothe the stomach and enhance digestive health. Unlike commercial antacids that can produce unwanted side effects, Acid Defense supplement is safe for daily usage with no known side effects. Garden of Life's proprietary Poten-Zyme™ fermentation process ensures maximum absorption and delivery of nutrients.

How does this aid my digestive health?

Beneficial flora in the gut is the very foundation of health. The probiotics, live enzymes and alkalinizing minerals naturally occurring in goat's milk whey, along with organic vegetable juice concentrates and our powerful Stomach™ Soothe Enzyme Blend, produce a soothing effect, help maintain a balanced pH, and promote the growth of healthy flora throughout the intestines.

How does alkalinizing reduce my heartburn and other digestive symptoms?

Dietary salt/sodium is alkaline by nature, and can be useful in the digestive process to break down foods and perform a wide variety of metabolic functions. When your body becomes too acidic, it compensates by pulling alkaline salts into the bloodstream. Since the body can tolerate only a slight imbalance in blood pH, it can rob precious alkaline reserves from the digestive tract in an attempt to restore the proper pH balance. This can result in heartburn, digestive distress, stomach upset, fatigue and other uncomfortable symptoms.

Commercial antacid products alleviate symptoms by blocking the production of acid, which can produce unwanted side effects. The ingredients in Acid Defense supplement, however, contain naturally occurring alkalinizing components that reestablish a balanced, healthy, system-wide pH.

Why does this formula include sodium and potassium?

If it were not for sodium making the tissue in your stomach highly alkaline, the lining would be destroyed by the hydrochloric acid normally produced there. The stomach, intestines, joints and ligaments are in constant need of natural food-source like sodium.

Potassium neutralizes acid waste and, in combination with sodium, maintains a healthy acid/alkaline balance. Potassium and sodium are almost always found together in the body and perform many of the same functions.

What makes this product better than other acid relief formulas?

Every day, millions of people reach for commercial antacids and the growing number of over-the-counter options for acid reflux. Many of these products try to address acid reflux symptoms by reducing the production of stomach acids. Stomach acids are critical for proper digestion, however, especially of calcium.

Many commercial antacids also contain toxic ingredients such as aluminum and artificial colors and sweeteners. These chemicals not only disrupt digestion, but they also alter the structure and function of stomach lining cells and cause side effects like headache, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

The worse effect, despite the temporary relief, is that antacids exacerbate the underlying cause of acid reflux and one of its most annoying symptoms. By neutralizing what little acid the stomach may produce, the stomach acid insufficiency is made worse. Then, in a desperate attempt to correct the problem, the stomach occasionally produces a surge of too much acid, causing the uncomfortable burning sensation.

Beyond Zantac and Pepcid-Addressing Acid Stomach with Natural pH Balancers

Judging from the plethora of heartburn-related advertising you see nowadays on television, it is pretty clear that a lot of people have acidity problems. We find it remarkable and distressing that none of the companies offering consumers acid-blocking and related products such as Zantac (ranitidine), Pepcid (famotidine) or Tagamet (cimetadine) appear to be interested in offering more than a patchwork approach to stomach acid problems.

None of these products offer fundamental methods of addressing the root causes of over acidity, which we believe are due in large part to the departure from the diets our ancestors were exposed to prior to the agricultural revolution only a few thousand years ago and since industrialization only 200 years ago.

Among the many health problems resulting from this mismatch between our genetically determined nutritional requirements and our current diet, some are without doubt a consequence of the deficiency of potassium alkali salts, which are amply present in the plant foods that our ancestors ate in abundance, and the exchange of those salts for sodium chloride, which has been incorporated copiously into the contemporary diet.

In fact, researchers at the University of California at San Francisco have demonstrated that, "contemporary net acid-producing diets do indeed characteristically produce a low-grade systemic metabolic acidosis in otherwise healthy adult subjects, and that the degree of acidosis increases with age…"

Second only to breathing and maintaining a heartbeat, the most important metabolic function our body performs is to maintain a balanced pH. When your body becomes too acidic, it will attempt to compensate by retaining alkaline salts in the bloodstream to offset the increase of tissue acidity. Since your body can only tolerate a small imbalance in blood pH, it will rob alkaline components from other places, including your body's precious alkaline reserves in an effort to restore a proper pH balance. This can result in heartburn, digestive distress, stomach upset, fatigue, and a multitude of varying symptoms.

So instead of relying on temporary solutions with potential side effects, including jaundice and chest pain for Zantac, as well as gynecomastia (i.e., male breast enlargement) for Tagamet, give true dietary modifications a try. You might find the results to be astounding.
